Engagement Season: why January is the biggest month for couples
Engagement season is real — and honestly, it makes total sense.
Christmas and New Year are peak “together time”: families around, photos being taken, everyone in their feelings, champagne within arm’s reach.
A proposal survey cited by Chillisauce notes 15% of proposals happen during the festive season, with 24 Dec–1 Jan singled out as one of the busiest windows.
UK wedding media also frequently reports December as the top proposal month — one UK round-up puts it at around 17% of all proposals.
So yes — December is for engagements.
January is where couples turn love into a plan.

Fun engagement + January planning statistics (UK-based)
Here are a few stats you’ll love if you’re the “I need a bit of context before I decide anything” type (I see you).
1) Engagement season is a recognised yearly trend
Late November through early February is widely known as engagement season.
2) Couples book venues quickly once they start enquiring
According to the UK Wedding Report 2024, once couples start contacting venues:
two-thirds book within 2 weeks
and 80% book within 4 weeks
And that’s exactly why January can feel like a sprint — because once couples begin, decisions happen fast.

What couples book first (and why January matters)
If you’re newly engaged, here’s the truth:
The first booking is almost always the venue
Your venue decides:
– the date
– the guest count
– the overall vibe
– what kind of day it becomes
And because so many couples start planning in January, it becomes competitive for:
– Saturdays
– summer weekends
– bank holidays
– and those dreamy “cute dates” everyone seems to want
A little gentle advice?
If you fall in love with a venue, don’t sit on it too long.
CHECK IF YOUR DATE IS STILL AVAILABLE
January wedding planning advice (UK): what to do now
January is not for perfection.
January is for momentum.
Here’s what makes planning feel calm instead of chaotic.
Start with priorities, not Pinterest
Before you book anything, decide what you care about most.
Not what you think you should care about.
What you actually care about.
Examples:
→ immaculate food and wine
→ a wild, full dancefloor
→ an intimate ceremony that feels like you
→ photos that tell the real story (not just the posed one)
Pick your top 3 priorities. Everything flows from there.
Book the availability suppliers first
Availability suppliers are the ones who only take a limited number of weddings per year, so once they’re booked… they’re booked.
Your January priority list:
→ Venue
→ Celebrant / Humanist / Registrar
→ Photographer
→ Videographer
→ Content creator (if you want the full media team / social-first coverage)
→ Caterers (if your venue doesn’t provide food)
→ Band / DJ. Planning your wedding during engagement season in the UK means these vendors book up quickly.

Scotland-specific wedding planning tips (Edinburgh + beyond)
Scotland is the best place in the world to get married (I’m biased — but I’m also right).
But Scotland has slightly different legal steps than England/Wales — and couples often only discover this halfway through planning.
Scotland legal paperwork: the 3-month window
In Scotland you submit marriage notice forms:
no earlier than 3 months
and no later than 29 days before the wedding

The luxe planning tip:
Treat 10–12 weeks as your true deadline (National Records of Scotland recommend this).
Registrar availability can be the hidden stress point
Here’s the mistake I see most often:
Couples secure the venue.
Book photography.
Then realise the registrar slots are more limited than expected.
So the Scotland rule is:
as soon as you secure your venue and date, contact the registrar/humanist/celebrant straight away.
Glasgow council notes that bookings can be made up to two years in advance (venue dependent)

A gentle step-by-step guide: your first few months engaged
This is where I want you to breathe.
Because the first few months engaged aren’t meant to be admin-heavy.
They’re meant to feel like you’ve stepped into a new part of life.

Month 1: enjoy it first
Before planning takes over, allow space for:
→ excitement
→ celebration
→ letting it land
Go for dinner. Buy the champagne.
Take the photos. Tell your friends.
Do nothing for a week if you want.
Engagement is not a waiting room.
It’s a chapter.

LIGHT MONTH 1 TASKS (ONLY IF YOU FEEL LIKE IT)
→ ring insurance
→ a private Pinterest board
→ save ideas you love
→ talk about “what we want it to feel like”

MONTH 2: BOOK THE FOUNDATIONS
This is when you book the big ones.
Start venue viewings, and once you’ve found the one, move quickly.
Then book your wedding day dream team:
→ celebrant / registrar
→ photographer
→ videographer
→ content creator (optional, but brilliant)
→ caterers (if needed)
→ band/DJ
CHECK YOUR DATE AND SECURE YOUR DATE

MONTH 3: TURN IT INTO AN EXPERIENCE
Now you can build:
→ timeline
→ ceremony style
→ outfit appointments
→ beauty suppliers
→ accommodation & transport
→ guest experience (the part people remember most)
Also, schedule a night where you don’t speak about weddings at all.
You’re fiancés — not project managers.

when is engagement season in the uk?
Engagement season in the UK typically runs from late November through early February, with a huge spike around Christmas, New Year and Valentine’s Day. It’s the time of year when couples are most likely to get engaged — and it’s exactly why January becomes the biggest wedding planning month

is january really a good time to start wedding planning?
Yes — January is genuinely one of the best times to start.
It’s when:
venues and suppliers are back in-office and replying quickly
couples are motivated and ready to make decisions
you can view venues without peak-season pressure
The key is to focus on the big bookings first, then enjoy the more detailed planning later.

what should we do first after getting engaged?
First… enjoy it.
Give yourselves a week or two where the only task is:
→ celebrating
→ telling your people
→ letting it land
Then, once you’re ready:
→ agree a rough budget
→ decide your guest count range
→ shortlist venues
Everything flows from there.

what are the first wedding suppliers we should book?
For most UK and Scotland weddings, your booking order should look like this:
→ Venue
→ Celebrant / humanist / registrar
→ Photographer
→ Videographer
→ Content creator (if you’re going for a full media team)
→ Caterers (if required)
→ Band / DJ
These are the suppliers that book up first and shape the entire wedding experience.

how far in advance should we book a wedding photographer in scotland?
If you’re planning a peak season wedding (May–October), book your photographer 12–24 months in advance if possible.
For off-season weddings, you may have more flexibility — but the most in-demand weekends go early, especially in:
→ Edinburgh
→ the Highlands
→ Isle of Skye
→ popular estates and exclusive-use venues

when do we submit the marriage notice in scotland?
In Scotland, marriage notice forms can be submitted:
no earlier than 3 months before
no later than 29 days before the wedding
However, it’s recommended you allow closer to 10–12 weeks so there’s no stress with paperwork or documents. If you are unsure, just give the city council a call and can help!

WHAT’S THE BEST MONTH TO GET MARRIED IN SCOTLAND?
There’s something magical about every season in Scotland:
→ Spring: soft light, fresh greens, fewer crowds in the cities
→ Summer: long evenings, outdoor receptions, golden hour
→ Autumn: rich colours, cosy luxury, stunning photos
→ Winter: candlelight, drama, romantic atmosphere
The best month isn’t about the “perfect” weather — it’s about the feeling you want your wedding to have.
However, remember this is Scotland and the weather can change very quickly so if it’s looking like change is on the way, bring a couple of clear umbrellas or simply embrace the rain and have fun!

IS A CONTENT CREATOR WORTH IT FOR WEDDINGS?
If you love the idea of:
→ behind-the-scenes clips
→ candid moments captured casually
→ fast turnaround reels (sometimes within 24–48 hours)
…then yes, a content creator can be an amazing add-on.
It’s especially popular for couples who want:
→ documentary photography
→ cinematic video
→ and social content too
